Clinical Trial Opportunity: Acupuncture for Individuals with Myasthenia Gravis
Healing Response Acupuncture & Functional Neurology is collaborating with the HealthPartners Neuroscience Center in a new clinical trial on Myasthenia Gravis. Once participants have signed up for the study (contact information below) and completed the on-boarding process, they can choose to receive acupuncture treatments at one of 3 sites, including our Lake Elmo clinic.
What is the goal of the study?
The goal of this study is to examine the effect of acupuncture treatment on the quality of life and activities of daily living in people with Myasthenia Gravis.
What is the cost?
You can participate in this study at no cost. All study-related acupuncture visits and materials will be paid for by the research study. Your participation in this study is completely voluntary. You can choose to take part in or leave the study at any time. You will not be penalized in any way for leaving the study.
Can I be in the study?
To participate in the trial you must:
• Be between the ages of 18-80
• Have been diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis
Unfortunately, you cannot participate in the study if:
– You plan to receive acupuncture treatment outside of this study, while enrolled
– You have a history of other central nervous system disorders or other serious medical conditions
– Are participating in another interventional research study
How will this study benefit me?
If you choose to take part in this study, there may or may not be direct benefits to you. However, the information from this study may benefit others by leading to better treatment for Myasthenia Gravis. A team of healthcare providers will closely monitor your health while you participate in this study.
What happens in the study?
You will be asked to
- Undergo acupuncture treatment two times per week for 12 weeks
- Complete Quality of Life and Activities of Daily Living surveys
What are the risks?
All research studies, including this study, may involve risks. Other studies using acupuncture have
noted the following side effects:
• Discomfort, soreness
• Mild bleeding
• Slight bruising
• Nausea
• Lightheadedness, fainting
Every effort will be made to protect your privacy, but as with all research studies, there is a risk of disclosure of personal health information. Although the results of this study may be presented at scientific meetings or in publications, your identity and identifying information will not be released.
