A practical guide to 810-nm near-infrared photobiomodulation, Alpha, Gamma, and home-use device options.

If you've been researching red light therapy for the brain, you may have come across the Vielight Neuro devices and wondered how they work—and what makes them different from a traditional red light panel.

What's the difference between Alpha and Gamma? Why are there lights on both the head and inside the nose? Which model do you actually need? And what does any of this have to do with mitochondria and brain function?

At Healing Response Acupuncture & Functional Neurology, these are questions we hear frequently. Here are the basics.

What Is Photobiomodulation?

Photobiomodulation, or PBM, uses specific wavelengths of red or near-infrared light to influence biological activity within cells.

One of its major proposed cellular targets is the mitochondrion, which generates most of the ATP our cells use for energy. PBM has been studied for its effects on mitochondrial function, cellular energy production, blood flow, nitric-oxide signaling, oxidative stress, and inflammatory signaling.

Because the brain requires enormous amounts of energy, these mitochondrial effects are one reason researchers have become interested in photobiomodulation for the nervous system.

What Wavelength Does Vielight Use?

The Vielight Neuro devices use 810-nanometer near-infrared light.

Near-infrared light is invisible to the human eye and penetrates biological tissues more deeply than visible red light, making it particularly interesting for brain-directed photobiomodulation.

What Is the Difference Between Alpha and Gamma?

Alpha and Gamma do not refer to different colors or wavelengths of light. Both use 810-nm near-infrared light.

The difference is how quickly the light pulses.

Alpha = 10 Hz

Alpha pulses at 10 times per second, a frequency within the alpha range of brain oscillations.

Alpha brain activity is commonly associated with relaxed wakefulness and resting-state activity. Vielight generally positions Alpha toward relaxation, mindfulness, learning, and sleep-related goals.

Gamma = 40 Hz

Gamma pulses at 40 times per second.

Gamma brain activity has important relationships with attention, memory, information processing, and communication between brain networks. Vielight therefore positions Gamma more toward cognition, memory, focus, and brain energy.

That doesn't mean 10-Hz light simply “puts your brain into Alpha” or 40-Hz light turns on Gamma. Brain networks operate across interacting frequencies, and research suggests pulsed PBM can influence broader patterns of brain activity and functional connectivity.

It is more accurate to think of Alpha and Gamma as different neuromodulatory inputs.

Should I Get Alpha or Gamma or Both?

This depends on your primary reason for wanting a device. People seeking support for anxiety, PTSD and insomnia for example, may choose the Alpha. People seeking support for cognitive function and cognitive fatigue often choose the Gamma. Having access to both frequencies may appeal to some users.

Why Does Vielight Use Both Transcranial and Intranasal Light?

The Vielight Neuro uses two routes of near-infrared light delivery.

Transcranial photobiomodulation delivers light through modules positioned against the scalp.

Intranasal photobiomodulation delivers near-infrared light through an applicator positioned within the nasal cavity.

Light delivered through the scalp must pass through skin, connective tissue, skull, and other tissues before some of that energy reaches underlying structures. Hair can also interfere with light delivery.

The intranasal applicator provides a different anatomical route without hair or the same tissue barriers encountered through the scalp.

Vielight combines the two approaches into what it calls intranasal-transcranial photobiomodulation (itPBM) providing broader access than transcranial stimulation alone. Human research has reported measurable brain responses associated with both routes of stimulation.

Is Vielight Different From a Regular Red Light Panel?

Yes.

A red light panel and a brain PBM device use some of the same photobiomodulation principles, but they are not equivalent. Wavelength, power, treatment duration, pulse frequency, anatomical location, distance from the body, and total light dose all influence the intervention and outcomes.

A general panel illuminates a relatively broad surface. Vielight is specifically designed to deliver 810-nm near-infrared light at targeted locations around the head combined with an intranasal pathway. Red light panels can be great for general wellness, but are not specific to the brain, or cognitive and emotional concerns.

Does More Powerful Light Mean Better Results?

No.

Photobiomodulation appears to have a biphasic dose-response relationship. Too little stimulation may produce little effect, while increasing the dose indefinitely does not necessarily produce greater benefit, and in some cases can create stress within the system. It is important to adhere to the instructions and recommendations provided by the company making the device.

This becomes particularly important with highly programmable devices such as the Neuro Pro 2. More power and more stimulation are not automatically better.

Which Vielight Neuro Model Do I Need?

This is an important question because there is a considerable price difference between models. All of Vielight's current Neuro models use 810-nm near-infrared light and combine transcranial and intranasal stimulation. The primary differences involve the available frequencies and degree of customization.

Neuro Alpha 4 — 10 Hz

Current price: $1,799*

The Alpha 4 provides 10-Hz Alpha stimulation and is generally oriented toward relaxation, mindfulness, learning, and sleep-related goals.

Neuro Gamma 4 — 40 Hz

Current price: $1,799*

The Gamma 4 provides 40-Hz Gamma stimulation, the frequency that has attracted considerable research interest in cognition and neurological function.

Neuro Duo 4 — Alpha + Gamma

Current price: $2,399*

The Duo 4 provides both 10-Hz Alpha and 40-Hz Gamma in one device.

For many home users, this may represent a useful middle ground: access to both primary frequencies without paying for the advanced programmability of the Pro.

Neuro Pro 2 — Advanced Customization

The Neuro Pro 2 is Vielight's most customizable system.

Current price: $5,000

It includes 12 independently programmable modules, preset protocols, frequencies from 1–10,000 Hz, adjustable power, frequency sweeps, phase control, cross-frequency coupling, and other advanced options.

That flexibility may be particularly interesting for clinicians, researchers, and advanced users.

But more programmability does not necessarily mean better results. Vielight itself notes that many users may find the standard Neuro devices sufficient, and not every possible Pro setting represents a clinically validated treatment protocol.

So Is the Neuro Pro 2 Worth the Extra Cost?

It depends on what you actually want to do.

  • •If you primarily want Alpha, the Alpha 4 provides it.
  • •If you primarily want Gamma, the Gamma 4 provides it.
  • •If you want access to both Alpha and Gamma, the Duo 4 provides both.
  • •The Pro becomes more relevant when you specifically want to customize frequencies, individual modules, intensity, phase relationships, and more complex stimulation protocols.

Don't assume that the most expensive device will automatically provide the most benefit. Choose based on the features you will actually use, your goals, and your budget.

How Long Are Vielight Sessions?

Standard Neuro sessions are generally around 20 minutes. Vielight recommends paying attention to individual response rather than assuming that more frequent use will necessarily produce greater benefit.

Individual sensitivity to PBM can vary.

Are There Side Effects or Reasons Someone Should Not Use It?

Vielight reports that some users may experience temporary effects such as headache, dizziness, or discomfort at the application site.

The company advises against use in people with active brain bleeding or a history of seizures, and recommends that pregnant individuals consult their healthcare provider.

If you have a neurological disorder or significant medical condition, discuss brain photobiomodulation with an appropriate healthcare professional.

Is Vielight FDA Approved to Treat Neurological Conditions?

No. Vielight describes its products as general wellness devices. They are not FDA approved or cleared to diagnose or treat concussion, traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer's disease, or other neurological disorders. However, Vielight technology has been used in published research involving brain function and several neurological populations.

Research evidence and regulatory approval are not the same thing. FDA approval is a very expensive and lengthy process that often leads to heavily increased cost of an approved device. While Vielight is not FDA approved for specific conditions, there is ongoing clinical research on its use for various neurological conditions.

What Does the Research Say About Concussion and TBI?

This is an area of particular interest to us at Healing Response.

Photobiomodulation has been studied in people with concussion, mild traumatic brain injury, and histories of repetitive head impacts, with researchers examining cognition, reaction time, balance, cerebral perfusion, functional connectivity, and other outcomes.

There are also important questions involving mitochondrial dysfunction, the post-concussion energy crisis, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation.

Because that research deserves more than a few paragraphs, we've covered it separately:

Where Can I Read the Research?

Vielight maintains a research library with links to published and ongoing studies involving traumatic brain injury, cognition, mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, PTSD, brain fog, and other areas.

If you're considering purchasing a device, we encourage you to look at the research itself rather than relying exclusively on product claims.
