At Healing Response, we use an Avant LZ-30Z handheld laser to direct red and near-infrared light to a particular area of the body. This type of treatment is called photobiomodulation, or PBM. If you're dealing with a wound that's taking time to heal, irritated skin, persistent pain, or a local circulation concern, we can discuss where targeted light therapy might fit in your care.
How does the Avant laser work?
The Avant LZ30 uses visible red light at 637 nm and near-infrared light at 808 nm. Red light is often used for concerns nearer the skin's surface; near-infrared light can reach somewhat deeper tissue. Your provider chooses the setting, area, and exposure time for the goal of your visit.
PBM is a noninvasive way to deliver light to tissue. Researchers study how absorbed light influences cellular energy and signaling involved in tissue repair, discomfort, and small-vessel blood flow near the treated area. It isn't the hot laser used for cutting or resurfacing skin.
What do we use it for?
Wound healing and skin irritation: We may apply light around a slow-healing area or irritated skin as part of a plan focused on tissue comfort and repair. For an open wound, the provider adjusts how the laser is positioned and works alongside the wound care you're already receiving.
Pain: We also use targeted PBM for sore joints, muscles, and other painful areas. Placement is based on where you feel symptoms and what you want to do more comfortably, whether that's moving, resting, or returning to an activity.
Circulation-related concerns: PBM has also been studied for its effects on local microcirculation—the flow of blood through tiny vessels near the treated tissue. If blood flow is part of the concern, we can discuss how a targeted session might fit with your broader care and what changes would be meaningful to you.
What does an in-clinic session look like?
We'll talk about the area you're concerned about and choose a practical goal for the session. Your provider then holds the handheld laser over or near the selected area, often for just a few minutes per area, adjusting the setting and time to the tissue being addressed. You and your provider wear protective eyewear while the laser is in use. There are no needles or incisions.
A visit can be focused on one small area or incorporated into a broader plan with other Healing Response services. We'll explain what we're doing and check in with you along the way.
How is this different from a Vielight device?
The Avant LZ-30Z we use in the clinic is a targeted handheld laser for specific areas of the body. Vielight Neuro devices discussed in our resource articles use a different design and approach to delivering light. Research on a particular Vielight device should not be taken as a study of our Avant laser; ask us about the equipment and goals relevant to your visit.
What happens first?
- 1Point out the wound, irritated skin, painful area, or circulation-related concern you'd like to discuss.
- 2Learn where we would direct the Avant laser and what a session would involve.
- 3Agree on what you'll pay attention to afterward and whether follow-up makes sense.
Could this be a good place to start?
If a wound, skin irritation, persistent pain, or local circulation concern has you looking for another supportive option, let's talk about whether targeted PBM could help you work toward your goals.
Common questions
Is the light therapy here the same as an at-home red-light panel?
Not exactly. The Avant LZ-30Z is a handheld laser that lets your provider direct red or near-infrared light to a selected area and adjust the session for that goal.
Can it be used near an open wound?
We discuss the wound and your existing care first. If PBM is part of the plan, your provider can position the laser near the area without placing it directly on broken skin.
How does the Avant laser compare with Vielight Neuro?
They are different devices. We use the Avant as a targeted clinic laser; our Vielight articles discuss research on specific transcranial and intranasal devices, not the laser used in a clinic visit.
